This workshop is intended to help mental health professionals provide effective care for individuals who are trauma survivors. Trauma-informed care (TIC) offers a helpful framework specifying guiding principles to attend to individually and organizationally. TIC encourages certain provider practices in line with guiding principles and mental health research, such as providing rationale, offering choices, and inviting questions to encourage active collaboration. Participants will learn how to conceptualize the long-term effects of trauma on emotional, cognitive, biological, behavioral, and interpersonal domains (i.e., symptoms) as adaptations to trauma. Participants will be provided steps to support development of specialized skills. This workshop is designed to provide mental health professionals and administrators with a foundational understanding of trauma-informed care. Trauma-informed care offers a framework for organizations serving individuals who have experienced trauma. Organizations are increasingly recognizing the importance of agency-wide education and awareness about trauma and the impact that trauma has on individuals. Participants will learn about the theoretical model of adaptation to trauma, and the long-term effects that trauma can have on emotional, cognitive, biological, behavioral, and interpersonal domains. Participants will learn how to provide a trauma-informed case conceptualization. We will discuss resilience and post-traumatic growth. Participants will learn about the importance of attending to their own well-being as part of trauma-informed care, using ongoing consultation and supervision, respecting the importance of self-care and stress management, and maintaining awareness and responsiveness to secondary traumatic stress.
