Safety & Security in Healthcare: OSHA and HIPAA Compliance Essentials

Accurate clinical documentation, protection of patient health information, and effective risk management are fundamental to delivering safe, ethical, and high-quality dental care. Dental records serve as the foundation for diagnosis, treatment planning, continuity of care, reimbursement, and communication among members of the healthcare team, while also functioning as legal documents that support clinical decision-making and professional accountability. At the same time, compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) is essential to safeguarding patient privacy, maintaining the confidentiality and security of protected health information (PHI), and meeting federal regulatory requirements. As dental practices increasingly rely on electronic health records and digital communication technologies, maintaining accurate documentation and protecting patient information have become more important than ever. This continuing professional development program provides practical guidance on best practices for dental documentation, HIPAA compliance, and risk management in today's practice environment. Participants will review the essential components of complete and defensible dental records, including patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, informed consent, progress notes, referrals, and follow-up documentation. The course also examines HIPAA Privacy and Security Rule requirements, common documentation and privacy pitfalls, cybersecurity considerations, and strategies for reducing regulatory and medicolegal risk. Through case-based discussions and practical applications, participants will learn to strengthen clinical documentation, protect patient information, improve communication across the dental team, and implement best practices that enhance patient safety, regulatory compliance, and professional accountability. Substitutes/Refunds/Transfers - Cancellations must be in writing (fax, email, or mail) - Registrants cancelling between two weeks and two full business days prior to the first day of the event are refunded at 70% of the registration fee subject to a minimum $25 cancellation fee. - No refunds or credits will be given for cancellations received less than two full business days prior to the event. - Cancellations greater than 2 weeks prior to the event will receive 100% refund. - No vouchers will be issued in lieu of a refund. - Transfers/substitute(s) welcome at discretion of Program Director. - Attendance at this activity grants permission for Southern Regional AHEC to use any photographs, audio, video, or other images from this activity for promotional or educational purposes.
